Pre-purchase car inspection in the UAE: what to check and where
A few hundred dirhams on a professional inspection is the best money you will spend on a used car. Here is what a good inspection covers, what you can check yourself, and how to use the report when you negotiate.

Most expensive used-car problems are invisible on a viewing: a repaired chassis, a gearbox that is starting to slip, flood damage under the carpets, or an odometer that has been wound back. A professional pre-purchase inspection finds them before they become your problem.
What you can check yourself at the viewing
You don't need to be a mechanic to rule out the obvious:
- Paint and panels: look along the sides in daylight. Uneven gaps, ripples or slightly different shades suggest repairs.
- Tyres: even wear across the tread, and the manufacture date — the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall (for example 2324 = week 23 of 2024). Tyres age fast in UAE heat.
- Under the bonnet: oil level and colour, coolant level, signs of leaks, and corrosion on the battery terminals.
- Inside: warning lights when you switch on, smell of damp (flood damage), wear on the pedals and steering wheel that doesn't match the mileage.
- Air conditioning: it should blow properly cold within a couple of minutes.
What a professional inspection adds
A good inspection centre puts the car on a lift and uses diagnostic equipment. Expect it to cover:
| Area | What is checked |
|---|---|
| Body & chassis | Paint thickness readings, signs of structural repair, previous accidents |
| Engine | Leaks, compression issues, warning codes, cooling system |
| Transmission | Shift quality, fluid condition, stored fault codes |
| Suspension & steering | Bushes, shock absorbers, play in the steering |
| Brakes | Pad and disc wear, fluid |
| Electronics | Fault codes in every module, airbags, sensors, cameras |
| Underbody | Rust, damage, leaks, exhaust condition |
| Road test | Noises, vibration, alignment, AC performance |
Ask for a written report with photos. You will use it to negotiate — and keep it as a record of the car's condition on the day you bought it.
Where to get one in the UAE
You can book inspections at RTA-approved vehicle testing centres in Dubai, at testing centres in the other emirates, at independent garages that specialise in your make, and through mobile inspection services that come to the seller's location. Prices depend on the depth of the check and the type of car — expect a few hundred dirhams for a comprehensive inspection, more for luxury and performance cars.
Red flags that should end the deal
- Evidence of structural repair to the chassis rails or pillars.
- Flood damage: silt or rust under the carpets, corroded wiring.
- Mileage that doesn't add up against service records.
- Airbag warning lights or deployed-and-replaced airbag modules without documentation.
- A seller who refuses an inspection.
Using the report to negotiate
Small findings — worn brake pads, old tyres, an overdue service — are normal on a used car and easy to price. Get quotes for the work and ask for that amount off the price. For bigger findings, walk away; there are always other cars.
