Summer car care in the UAE: tyres, batteries and AC in 45 °C heat
UAE summers are hard on cars. These are the checks that prevent the most common summer breakdowns — tyre blowouts, dead batteries, overheating and failing air conditioning — and what to keep in the car.

From June to September, road surfaces in the UAE can get far hotter than the air temperature. That heat is behind most summer breakdowns: tyres that fail on the highway, batteries that die without warning, and engines that overheat in traffic. Most of it is preventable with a few checks.
1. Tyres: age, pressure and condition
Tyres are the most important summer check — a blowout at highway speed is dangerous.
- Check the age. The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall show the week and year of manufacture (e.g. 1823 = week 18 of 2023). Rubber hardens and cracks with heat and time; many specialists in the region advise replacing tyres after about five years even if the tread looks fine.
- Check pressure when the tyres are cold, in the morning, against the figure on the door pillar sticker — not the maximum on the tyre. Under-inflated tyres overheat; over-inflated ones lose grip.
- Look for cracks, bulges and uneven wear. Uneven wear can mean alignment or suspension problems.
Driving on worn or damaged tyres can also lead to traffic fines and black points.

2. Battery
Heat shortens battery life — in the UAE a car battery often lasts noticeably less than in cooler countries. Warning signs: slow cranking, dim lights at idle, or a battery older than two to three years. Most service centres and battery shops will test it for free in minutes. Replace it before it strands you in a 45 °C car park.
3. Cooling system
- Check the coolant level (only when the engine is cold — never open a hot radiator cap).
- Watch the temperature gauge in slow traffic. If it climbs above normal, switch off the AC and turn the heater to full to pull heat from the engine, then stop safely and let it cool.
- Have hoses and the radiator fan checked at your next service.
4. Air conditioning
If the AC takes longer to cool or blows warm at idle, get it checked early — it often only needs a re-gas, a new cabin filter or a cleaned condenser. Left alone, a small leak can end with a failed compressor, which is expensive.
5. Protect the inside and outside
- Use a sunshade and park in the shade or covered parking where you can.
- Never leave lighters, aerosols, power banks, phones, or medication in a hot car.
- Wash off sand and dust regularly; a coat of wax or ceramic protection helps paint resist UV.
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute.
6. Keep an emergency kit in the car
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Water (several litres) | For you, and in an emergency the coolant |
| Phone charger | Breakdowns take longer than you expect |
| Warning triangle & reflective vest | Required for safety on the hard shoulder |
| Tyre inflator or a checked spare | Many modern cars have no spare wheel |
| Roadside assistance number | Check whether your insurance includes it |
